Attunement

Legend

“When the astral whispered to the void, it was not in words—but in resonance.”

“And those who listened, became more than wielders. They became conduits.”
Skjald Yell'a'Beard

Description

Attunement is the art of forging a metaphysical bond between a sentient being and a magical item, relic, or artefact. It is not merely possession—it is communion. Through Attunement, a character aligns their astral aura with the latent energies of an item, unlocking its true potential and, in some cases, awakening dormant consciousness within the item itself.

Unlike Weaving, which manipulates ambient mana, Attunement is internal and relational. It requires emotional clarity, mental discipline, and, often, a ritual of resonance. The process varies depending on the origin of the item:

  • Vornir Threads attune only to those whose fate is already spun into the item’s existence.
  • Divine Relics require celestial binding, often involving oaths or astral contracts.
  • Void Constructs resist attunement unless the wielder has Stoicheian or Wickeryadi bonds.
  • World-Forged Items demand harmonic alignment with the wielder’s aura.

Attunement is not always permanent. Some items reject their wielder over time. Others evolve, requiring deeper attunement rituals or sacrifices. And a rare few—known as Living Relics—attune back, altering the wielder in return.

“Even the gods must attune, lest they shatter the relics of their forebears.”
—Skjald Valgrif

History

Attunement predates structured magic. In the earliest days, before the Divine Races entered the Astral and became tainted, they discovered that some objects “responded” to them. These were not tools—they were partners. This was later taught to mortal races, and the first known attunement recorded is in the Scroll of Ael’Thir, where a wandering sage bonded with a shard of leaked astral-metal and gained the ability to speak with the mana sea and links. This metal became the first of the mawmens precious metal, Ljostari Bronze..

During the Era of Binding, when gods began crafting relics to bind and house astral energies, Attunement became sacred. Temples taught rituals to align with divine instruments. Later, as mana manipulation grew, Attunement evolved into a discipline taught in secluded monasteries and arcane academies.

The Attunement Schism occurred when the Mentalists declared that true attunement required no ritual—only intent. This led to the formation of the Silent Bond Circle, a secretive order that attunes through thought alone. Some say that those of this order, is also those behind Allele Diploid.

“The blade does not serve the hand. It serves the soul behind it.”

Organisation

Attunement is taught in schools through a series of progressive rites:

  • Initiation: Learning to sense magical auras and identify resonance types.
  • Harmonic Trials: Exercises in emotional and astral alignment.
  • Bonding Rituals: Formal attunement ceremonies, often involving astral projection or essence infusion.
  • Echo Training: Learning to interpret feedback from attuned items, including dreams, visions, or emotional surges.
  • Multi-Attunement: Bonding with several items simultaneously.
  • Symbiotic Attunement: Allowing the item to influence the wielder’s abilities or personality.
  • Attunement Severance: Breaking bonds safely—often necessary when items become corrupted or possessive.

“He wore the ring for seven years. When he removed it, he no longer remembered his name.”
—Skjald

Mentalists, again, are the exception. They attune by thought alone, bypassing rituals entirely. But their bonds are volatile, and some say they risk merging too deeply.

“At first it was but an exceptional necklace, then a collar growing into a full armour – swallowing her fully.”

Special

Attunement is the only school that allows passive magic. Once bonded, items may act on behalf of the wielder without conscious effort. Some relics even protect their attuned from harm, whisper secrets, or evolve new powers.
