Description

Hilt Hunters are renowned for their athleticism, agility, and unwavering dedication to their craft. Often clad in simple, practical attire that facilitates swift and efficient movement, they are readily identifiable by the collection of hilts, tsuba guards, and other blade components adorning their belts, chests, or weapons. While swords and daggers are their preferred weapons, Hilt Hunters are proficient in wielding a variety of blades, including axes, hammers, and polearms. Some possess innate magical abilities, which they employ to enhance their combat prowess or protect their allies.

Beyond their exceptional physical abilities, Hilt Hunters possess a unique understanding of combat herbs, which grant them enhanced strength and resilience. Moreover, they are reputed to possess a sixth sense, allowing them to anticipate attacks and safeguard their allies.

History

The Hilt Hunters trace their origins to the tumultuous aftermath of Mt. Vulas’ eruption, triggered by the Vular’s tyrannical attempts to seize the lands and terrorise the Ljost Alfar and Dwarven kin. A group of Jomzaar warriors, driven by a millennia-long feud with the Vular and seizing the opportunity to avoid retribution, united to hunt and slay the surviving Vular.

Valnir ‘Hilthand’ Voelund, a legendary figure renowned for his unwavering courage and determination, led the Jomzaar warriors in their pursuit of vengeance. Possessing exceptional strength and skill, some even believed he was infused with the power of the god Sejr. It was Valnir who first conceived the idea of collecting the hilts of slain foes as a symbol of their victories, believing these hilts would serve as a reminder of their past and a testament to their commitment to justice. Thus, Valnir became the first Hilt Hunter when he used his magic dwarven sword ‘Mountain-nail’ to slay Joerün Illûtaval, and his legacy lives on in the Hilt Hunters, who continue to uphold his ideals and carry on his work.

Although they managed to eliminate several Vular, divine intervention and the actions of other mortals curtailed their hunt. However, this experience left a profound mark on them. Inspired by their hunting prowess and the power of their unity, they vowed to protect the innocent and uphold justice.

As a symbol of their commitment, they began collecting the hilts of slain foes, each hilt representing a victory over evil. The Hilt Hunters have a rich and storied history, marked by countless battles and triumphs. They have faced numerous threats, from marauding horde leaders to powerful mages, and have consistently emerged victorious.

Notable events in their history include:

  • 1170: Joining the 1st Alliance.
  • 1249: Hunting down leaders of The Torch during the 1st Alliance’s victory.
  • 1277: Participating in the 2nd Alliance during the Great Invasion.
  • 1283: Joining the Cleansing Crusade to purge the invaders.

One of the most significant events in their history was the Great Hilt Hunt, a legendary quest to recover sacred hilts plundered from Grimsborg, the high king’s castle. This epic journey tested the Hilt Hunters’ courage, skill, and loyalty, solidifying their reputation as fearless protectors of the realm.

Cartography

Hilt Hunters can be found throughout the realm, from the sun-drenched plains of the northern sunlands to the frozen wastes of the Rim. They are often drawn to areas of conflict or unrest, where their skills are most needed, or where they can settle old scores or contracts more or less unnoticed.

While they do not have a known permanent headquarters, Hilt Hunters maintain a network of secret outposts and safe houses throughout the entire realm. These hidden havens serve as places of refuge, training grounds, and gathering points for important missions.

Organisation

The Hilt Hunters are a highly disciplined and structured organization, governed by a council of elders. However, since the Cleansing Crusade, the council of elders has become divided, leading many lower-ranked members to prefer the field over frequent visits to their settlements.

To become a Hilt Hunter, one must be identified by an existing member and undergo a rigorous training regimen that tests both physical and mental fortitude. The training includes combat techniques, survival skills, and the study of the Hilt Hunters’ history and traditions. Successful candidates are inducted into the order upon presenting their first hilt.

They also train their members to be wary of the Bards, Octogon, and the Monster Hunters, as these organisations often pose a threat to the Hilt Hunters’ lives and treasures.
