Dry Zone

“Once mildmarsh lands…”

Skjald Yell'a'Beard

Description

In the dry climate, the sun scorches the earth, the air parches the soil, and water is a rare boon, making lands thirsty. These regions, devoid of lush greenery, are marked by vast deserts and barren plains. Life here is a test of endurance, where inhabitants rely on rare oases and deep wells. The skies remain clear, but the air is dry and unforgiving.

Like tropical climates, it tends to have high atmospheric temperatures but, in contrast, has low precipitation rates. Because of these low precipitation rates, vegetation is typically scarce. On the borders of the dry and tropical zones, brief but intense rainfalls bring a fleeting burst of life. Where dry lands meet the continental zones, the stark difference in temperature can create fierce winds and dust storms.

Cartography

Regions known for having dry climates include the northern regions of Naldar, Midgard, and Markeoy; and Utari, Mealis, and Findon.

Average Temperature Range: High average temperatures year-round with extreme diurnal temperature variations (hot days, cold nights).

Precipitation Patterns: Extremely low precipitation, often with long periods of drought. Occasional intense but short-lived rainfall.

Wind Patterns: Often characterized by strong, dry winds, which contribute to arid conditions and dust storms.

Vegetation:

  • Cactus and succulent varieties
  • Drought-resistant shrubs and grasses
  • Ephemeral plants that bloom rapidly after rain
  • Salt-tolerant plants in coastal areas

Wildlife:

  • Reptiles: lizards, snakes, and tortoises
  • Mammals: camels, rodents, jackals, foxes
  • Birds: vultures, eagles, owls
  • Insects: scorpions, beetles, ants

Human Adaptations:

  • Nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyles to follow water sources.
  • Development of water-conserving technologies and agriculture.
  • Light, breathable clothing to protect from the sun.
  • Adaptation to high salt intake due to limited fresh water.

N-Erectus Adaptations:

  • Physiological adaptations such as increased heat tolerance and water efficiency.
  • Unique body structures, like long limbs and large ears for heat dissipation.
  • Development of magical or technological solutions for water scarcity.
  • Specialised diets adapted to desert plants and animals.
