Town

Legend

“Some campfires and markets, grew into settlements which became safety nests and cradles of characters, and legends.”

Skjald Kazumix

History

Through time some settlements slowly grew into towns, some content with their slow evolution, others urgently craving the status as city. Town rulers often varied as local leaders rose and fell, or distant nobility aqquired the lands. Especially the tumultarious aftermath of The Great Invasion has resulted in quite some changes.

Organisation

In The Realm settlements spread across an area with no distance greater than 200 m between habitations forming a single unbroken spread of urban development, with a population greater than 500 inhabitants, is a municipality.

As of The Great Invasion, there were 21633 municipalities in the realm, with population over 20,000, 14365 municipality with population over 30,000, 8053 municipality with population over 50,000 and 2427 municipality with population over 100,000.  All numbers reflect the municipality population, meaning people who have their usual residence in the municipality.

In the realm, a town is normally not a self governing administrative division, therefore a town generally does not necessarily correspond to a municipality, which is the second-level local government in a country.

Special

Towns are generally run by a leader or counsil, regardless of nobility present. So two adjacent towns within the same country, or area, may practice different interpraticions of the Law of The Realm, if at all.
