Legend

“Their resilience towards Mana manipulation… is a legend among races.”

Skjald Kazumix

Description

In the heart of this fantastical realm lies a people, born from rugged lands that sculpted their resilience; they have thrived amidst challenges. From their earliest days, they forged their identity amidst the untamed wilderness, where survival demanded cunning and adaptability. Over generations, they honed their craft, blending the artistry of their ancestors with the practicality of the present.

At the heart of their cultural development lies a reverence for tradition, where storytelling is cherished as much as the bow. Their artistry finds expression not only in the intricate patterns of their garments but also in the fluid grace of their martial forms.

Yet, it was their defence capabilities that truly set them apart. Like shadows in the mist, they employed guerilla tactics with the precision of well-aimed arrows. Their mastery of archery is legendary; each shot is a testament to their discipline and skill. In times of conflict, they became the whisper in the forest, the shadows amongst the rocks, striking swiftly and retreating into the embrace of the land they called home.

Their spirit, like the mountains that cradle their villages, is unyielding. Rooted in the soil of their ancestors, they stand as guardians of their realm, ever watchful and ready to defend what they believe is theirs.

Their appearance reflects the rugged beauty of their homeland, with features weathered by the elements yet imbued with an undeniable strength. Their eyes, like the depths of ancient forests, hold a keen intelligence tempered by the wisdom of generations past. High cheekbones and sculpted jawlines speak of resilience, while the lines etched upon their faces tell tales of trials overcome.

In their demeanour, there is a quiet confidence born from a deep connection to the land. They move with the fluid grace of dancers, each step a testament to their harmony with nature. Yet beneath their serene exterior lies a fierce determination, a fire that burns brightly in the face of adversity.

Their interactions are marked by a profound respect for tradition and hierarchy, yet they are tempered by a sense of camaraderie forged in the crucible of hardship. They are a people of few words; their communication is often carried out through subtle gestures and knowing glances.

In times of peace, they are known for their hospitality, welcoming travellers with open arms and sharing the bounty of their land. But should the need arise, they can transform into formidable adversaries, their loyalty to their kin and homeland unwavering.

Above all, they embody the spirit of resilience, adapting to whatever challenges come their way with grace and determination. They are the guardians of their realm, the stewards of their heritage, and the embodiment of the indomitable spirit of their people.

History

Dark Ages

There are many myths about Goreans birth: one that claims a Boriac sired twins on a Archaic bear woman, and these are the Gorean ancestors; one that it was a Thurse in disguise seducing a Boriac; one that it was a god in disguise that seduced a Thurse.

The most reliable origin, though, is one we heard from vampires. Saying that shortly after their transformation, they encountered a group of Archaic people, resulting in the Goreans. Thus, it’s due to the Wickeryadi taint that Goreans are so resilient to Magic.

Those two Drakk Alfar vampires who told us this claimed to have been among the very ones breeding up Goreans and also said that their urge to embrace quickly grew dominant. So all their archaic partners were soon gone, but as they felt an odd bond to their offspring, they did not embrace or slay them. Maybe that’s why there are no known records of Gorean vampires.

Skjald Sigurd

Up through the dark ages, they spent most of their time wandering from Void Garden to void garden, searching for a Herb. We think it most likely would have been for a cure for vampyrism, or maybe releasing the wickeryadi spirits lingering in their Drakk Alfar and Ljost Alfar parents.

Due to their long history as wandering hunterers along bumpy paths in rough terrain and ill or non-tended void gardens, they had become among the most skilled races in the use of bows for gathering food and defending. A skill that would benefit them greatly in the times to come.

As far as legend goes, they never found that herb in The Void despite searching far and wide. Then everything changed, as the Divines pulled and pushed every Void Garden into a gargantuan carpet of matter and beings. This they used to wrap around the Astral, and so it became the surface of our World. With the void high above and far away.

Skjald Vinotis

First Age

As the Goreans had grown to large numbers, the Divine Races who shaped the World honoured their lifestyle and placed them in Midgard in rough hilly terrains. Thus, their new homes in countries, now known as Ikarato, Oshon, and Scia, bore a likeness to their previously preferred void gardens.

When the glow from astral leaks disappeared, the world became shrouded in darkness, and the new terrain claimed a fair share of those Goreans who couldn’t resist exploring or hunting. Then, when the Sun and Moon appeared, they noticed a huge difference between the void and the world.

Several other human and n-erectu races lived close to them, so almost every trip exploring the wildlands ended in conflict. Either they were attacked walking in the wild, fought off when they accidently stumbled into sacred grounds or settlements, or raided at home if followed.

Thus, they abandoned their travelling culture and began carving out an empire in their harsh, rough lands. But how they could so abruptly abandon their search is a mystery. Anyway, time previously spent travelling and hunting was instead used on securing borders and settlements and fending off raiders and invaders. They also began purging their areas of other humans and n-erectus, resulting in some nasty battles.

Skjald Valgrif

In time, as they had grown in numbers, they secured control over their lands with iron grips. They established a great empire in 842, stretching from Ikarato to Scia, with their Capital in northcentral Oshon. Their location on the southwestern shores of Midgard, close to Naldar, Dalip, and West Fjella, was a good trade spot and brought them riches beyond belief. Thus, despite their reputation as skilled archers and resiliance towards magic, both Tatongōl and Borji unsuccessfully tried several times to carve back into their realm.

The Gorean strategy of withdrawing from their settlements, showering advancing foes with a rain of arrows, and harassing enemy supply lines until they fled or were eradicated proved sound. Thus did their archery legend grow to equal that of Fautyr and Alfar, with whom they had frequent skirmishes.

Quickly regaining lost areas as fast as defeated foes withdrew, they didn’t pursue enemies, as they would endanger themselves by doing so. But they kept enforcing their borders, and a large number of Goreans chose to live in the borderlands.

Skjald Ulrich

The pressure and occasional raids from other races, as well as a preference for their Wickeryadi-tainted ancestors, had resulted in strong bonds with vampires. So, when the 1st Cataclysm unfolded, they wholly supported the vampires, and when it all peaked, their contingents of archers are said to have been a major factor in why the Vornir did the Hymn of Truenames.

Mana Manipulators support this obscure claim, as it unjustly removes blame from them. To be honest, their archery skills aside, a single Vornir or Boriac could easily anhilate hundreds upon hundreds of sharpshooting Goreans.

None the less, as they participated in a foreign war for the first time. Gorean Tribes lost a large amount of their best when the world almost died, huge landmasses shifted, the world tilted, and The Rim almost sealed completely. Luckily, vampires came out on top, with Goreans on the winning side, if anyone could claim such after the disaster. Thus, the Goreans kept most of their homelands and, as such, only lost areas destroyed by the cataclysmic energies.

Skjald El Mary

Second Age

They have always regarded the outcome of the 1st Cataclysm as a great victory, although it also made several other races, both humans and N-Erectus, somewhat hostile. Hostility that has kept the Gorean archers skills honed, making them feared for their elusive, almost partisan, combat style. These combat styles and skills have kept them the dominant group amongst the Indigenous of southwestern Midgard.

They soon realised that the borderlands outside their territory were thinly populated, so their vast populations began to spread north into Etain. and Yugahama. Settler caravans also spearheaded into Julmul. and as far as Økatuur. This migration raised quite an eyebrow and added several new foes to the list, but as they advanced with care and tried to fit in, they succeeded.

Skjald El Mary

Unable to travel in the same way as in The Void, they had spent the years of the first and second ages exploring their new home, creating Settlements, roads, hunting, and cultivating the lands. Only once had they participated in foreign warfare, so they had a large, solid society. That could support the expansion, and with time, they became somewhat accepted and also began to be more accepting.

It did not prevent a large skirmish with Borji erupting into a great war in 728, forcing them to send a vast army to the frontlines in Yugahama, and then in 731 Tatongōl swarmed their settlements in Julmul and Økatuur. Fighting against these two huge foes made Kobold, Fautyr, T'Aurs, Archaic, Ogryl, and Moss'Ari come forth and destroy unwanted Gorean settlements.

When the massive number of foes was joined by fleets of N'Aldaan in 732, the opposition became too great, and the Goreans chose to surrender. Doing so, their ancient empire dissolved, splitting into the three kingdoms led by Gojeso-Kvan in Ikarato, Kamaro-Yi-Yu in Oshon, and Jikan an Liao in Scia. All settlements in Etain, Yugahama, Julmul, and Økatuur were sadly forced to detach from the Gorean grip.

But their surrender of 733 was conditional, and they had managed to keep their army, which they used to force the N’Aldaan away. Then they began negotiations with the n-erectu, ensuring peaceful coexistence. With internal peace secured in 736, Gojeso-Kvan, Kamaro-Yi-Yu, and Jikan an Liao began to reconnect with the lost Gorean settlements in Etain, Yugahama, Julmul, and Økatuur.

Skjald Valgrif

Bitter was the competition… three craving kings… enlarging their wings.

Breaking an ancient chain… alas, not all though in vain… so much to gain.

Brushing aside internal pride… a plan for another ride… together stride.

Skjald Kazumix

As each of the three kings began strengthening their ties with their remote cousins, they also sent ambassadors and envoys to Naldar, Dalip, and West Fjella. This was mainly to establish and secure trade routes, but also to keep an eye on foreign reactions to their reconnection attempts. But as they did things outside their area in a subtle, polite way, no one reacted harshly, and they slowly reconnected and grew, and outsiders didn’t notice the rivalry between the three Gorean groups.

Slowly, they grew back into one people, centred among their three kingdoms and all their remote communities. They had a large amount of knowledge and cultural influences, floating back to their rulers and Guilds. Most was discarded as it didn’t fit their likes or customs, but some things contributed to their evolution.

As the Borji had begun toppling Gorean gates and enslaving settlements, the Goreans in Julmul and Økatuur persuaded Jikan an Liao’s grandson in Scia to come to their aid in 952. But when the king of Scia sent his army, the king of Ikarato sent his army across Oshon to aid them. This enfuriated the queen of Oshon, and her army attacked the crossing one from Ikarato, so the Gorean War broke out.

It was a foolish move by the queen, as it resulted in the Ikarato army running wild in Oshon’s western part. Scias troops delivered pressure on their western flank, and troops from Julmul and Økatur spearheaded down from the north. And in 953, N’Aldaan raiders began to sweep Oshon’s shores, so in the autumn of 954, Oshon collapsed. Scia was quick to claim most of it, along with all of Julmul and half of Økatur. Ikarato took the other half as well as chunks of Etain.

This resulted in a long period known as the Gorean Twins time, but in 1964, N’Aldaan raiders delivered so much pressure on Ikarato that their armies became exhausted. This weak state spurred the Scians bold move in 1971, where their offered aid turned out to be a trick. Once their vast armies were deep inside Ikarato, they seized their old capital in Oshon and removed the western leaders. As the year ended, the victorious Scian faction had united all Goreans and thrown the N’Aldaan back into the sea.

So, from 1972, when the second Gorean empire began to bloom again, their arts, crafts, and culture reached unparalled heights. They also strengthened their ties with the remote settlements at Naldar, Dalip, and West Fjella. When suddenly, a large bull-headed human surged through their lands, knocked quite a large number of nobles around, disrupting their empire, and shortly thereafter Jomzaar ships arrived.

As their empire dissolved, due to old factions seeing their chance of regaining power, the Wanderers managed to gain footholds, so the Gorean kitchen luckily gained some great flavours. Thinking of that, we should order some food.

Skjald Yell'a'Beard

Third Age

Several years of this new, third age had already passed. But due to their location, they encountered the wanderers and their god later than most. As they had no vampiric embracings, the bull-headed gods rampage through their ranks was a mystery, and they did not care much for trading with these newcomers. Thus, their coexistence with wanderers evolved rather slowly, and Gorean lands were where Jomzaar, Vular, and Rimzir had the hardest time establishing themselves. But they did gain footholds, bringing wanderer conflicts to Gorean shores.

As the second Gorean empire crumbled due to factions clawing to restore their former might, what are today’s borders began to form. With several grand Tribes standing out, the Countries saw strong kings, queens, nobility, courts, and councils. Some even had other humans and n-erectus presiding at the tables, showing that Goreans clearly remembered earlier mistakes.

Skjald Sejrik

Had the integration with the Wanderers been slow and smooth, the end of the age and dealings with Vular were the direct opposite. Although uninvolved in the Vular War, the war’s end had quite an impact on Goreans. The fight was too far away; the Mt. Vulas volcanic eruption didn’t affect their lands. But, as the sinking of Ljostari created the Deep Blue Tsunami, they would come to feel that one.

Especially those fjords and bays facing directly towards Ljostari took quite some damage, as the tsunami kept building in height as the waters narrowed. Some harbours and settlements are said to have been hit by waves as high as 60 metres, consuming everyone and everything and forever changing the areas. At certain places, even the divine magic protecting the Astral Gates failed, and they were flushed away. Creating disruptions to the Astravel pattern before it became commonly known also cost quite a large number of Astravelers their lives.

Skjald Ulrich

Fourth Age

Many of their coastal societies were destroyed or damaged; they began to rebuild theirs and help other humans and n-erectus. They also received aid from others, where they were struck the hardest, and as reports and rumours began to flow in, they realised that none of the Arisen walking amidst them was of Gorean origin. One such was about a giant Arisen arriving within the deep blue tsunami that could not have been of human origin.

As they overcame the deep blue tsunami devastation, they cleaned out liches of other origins and tore down vularian ruins. They began to strengthen their empire, and up through the Age of Hordes they grew into a tightly united people. They fended off most attempts to seize and dominate their lands, but pockets of Borji, Tatongol, Jomzaar, Fautyr, Kobold, etc. managed to create permanent settlements.

Skjald

The tale of Keal Moo-Sun and Yąrakñů Ýololoş made the Goreans even more hospitable, and they opened more towards N-Erectus and other humans in their lands. This openness towards others living in their lands secured that Gorean traders, diplomats, etc., whose families grew to small communities in lands far away, were accepted there. Generally liked and appreciated, their Gorean behaviour and attitude did the rest. As the families grew, friends came along, or workers from back home enlarged Gorean communities, so that whole streets Towns and Villages consisted solely of Goreans.

These enclaves, although following local rules and laws, kept paying homage to Gorean customs and rulers. Their upholding of Gorean culture instilled deep respect amongst the n-erectu, opening gates to several locations normally shut to humans, so Goreans gained rare knowledge. This found its way back to the Gorean masters, or was traded to Tatongols in exchange for precious steeds used to create the Gorean second legend, their armoured cavalry.

The tale of Kael Moo-Sun

In the aftermath of the Vular War and the catastrophic Deep Blue Tsunami, tales began to circulate among the Goreans of a colossal figure rising from the depths of the sea. They whispered of a being so massive that it towered over mountains, its undead form wreathed in spectral flames that cast an eerie glow across the devastated coastal lands.

According to legend, this giant Arisen was not of human origin but something far older and more sinister. Some said it was a remnant of a forgotten age, a creature born of darkness and chaos long before the dawn of civilization. Others claimed it was the result of a cursed ritual gone awry—a failed attempt by ancient sorcerers to harness the power of the underworld.

Regardless of its origins, the giant Arisen became a symbol of fear and awe among the Goreans. They spoke of how it would emerge from the roiling waves, its baleful gaze sweeping across the shattered landscape as it sought out those foolish enough to challenge its dominion.

But amidst the tales of terror, there were whispers of a different kind. Stories began to spread of brave adventurers who dared to seek out the giant Arisen, driven by a desire to uncover the truth behind its existence. They spoke of perilous journeys through treacherous seas and haunted ruins, facing untold dangers at every turn. But none had returned successfully.

In 194, a 29-year-old Gorean named Kael was determined to prove himself worthy of his people’s legacy, so Kael set out on a quest to find the giant Arisen and unlock the secrets of its power. With a sword in hand and courage in his heart, he braved the raging waters and ventured out.

After many trials and tribulations, Kael finally came face-to-face with the giant Arisen. Standing before the towering figure, he felt a chill run down his spine as he gazed into its glowing eyes. But instead of striking out in fear, Kael stood his ground and spoke words of defiance.

To his surprise, the giant Arisen did not attack. Instead, it regarded him with a sense of curiosity, as if intrigued by his courage. In that moment, Kael realised that the creature was not the mindless monster of legend but something far more complex.

Through conversations that spanned days and nights, Kael learned the truth behind the giant Arisen’s existence. It was indeed a being of ancient origin, born from the ashes of a forgotten age in the void. But far from being a harbinger of destruction, Yąrakñů Ýololoş was a guardian of balance, a Thursar tasked with maintaining the delicate equilibrium between the realms of the living and the dead.

With this newfound knowledge, Kael returned to his people and shared the tale of his encounter with Ýololoş. No longer viewed as a creature of fear, the giant Arisen became a symbol of hope and redemption for the Goreans. And though the scars of the Deep Blue Tsunami would never fully heal, they found solace in knowing that there were guardians like Ololoş.

And so, the legend of the giant undead Arisen lived on, a reminder of the enduring power of courage and compassion in the face of adversity. Adding to the shaping of the Gorean ways of living.

Skjald Ulrich

The lack of Gorean Arisen further strengthened their belief in being of vampire origin, a belief that was even further strengthened when some Goreans performed rituals to become Lich. These powerhungry Goreans warped, withered, and dissolved, but none could seemingly become liches; not even the Common of half Gorean origin could be tainted. Thus, their society does not have the arisen, or liche, society stain.

With the knowledge that beings mightier than vampires with extreme divine powers were watching things, the Goreans became a people resting solidly within themselves. And as they began shaping their own destinies, bonds with weak lords and tribes were strengthened as some grew to such power that they overtook the positions of former liege lords.

In the wake of the Deep Blue Tsunami, it was Scia, situated furthest to the southeast, that bore the brunt of nature’s fury. The nobility and courts of Scia, once vibrant and flourishing, stood as testament to the resilience of the Gorean people in the face of devastation.

The lords and ladies of Scia, though shaken by the cataclysmic events, rose from the ruins with a fierce determination to rebuild their shattered land. Their courts, once cloaked in mystery and intrigue, served as beacons of hope amidst the rubble, rallying their people to forge a new future from the remnants of the past.

In Oshon, nestled to the west of Scia, the nobility were spurred to action by the plight of their neighbors. The lords and ladies of Oshon extended a helping hand to their brethren in Scia, offering aid and support as they rebuilt their coastal societies and healed the wounds inflicted by the tsunami.

Meanwhile, in Ikarato, to the northwest, the nobility stood vigilant against the ever-present threat of the N’Aldaan raiders. The lords and ladies of Ikarato bolstered the coastal defences all the way to Økatuur, ensuring the safety and security of their people in the face of future calamities.

Across all three lands, the nobility and courts stood united by a common purpose—to safeguard the future of the Gorean people and ensure that their legacy endures for generations to come.

As the age went on, some tribes crumbled and others rose to power, spurred by outstanding individuals or families who broke ties with old, weak roots; some new ones grew. All the leaders of Ikarato, Oshon, Scia, Etain, Yokahama, Julmul, Økatuur, and those representing Goreans at Naldar, Dalip, and West Fjella. Had seats in a Gorean high council that held meetings twice each year. If a leader couldn’t participate, a liason was sent, so the Goreans kept their ties to their ancient culture.

Their council was approached by agents of the 1st Alliance in 1172, but no ties were made, and the Goreans, as such, didn’t support the ideas about The Realm.

As things unfolded, they did, though, begin to support the 1st Alliance. Slowly, Gorean leaders came to realise that three of their main opponents, Borji, Tatongōl, and the n-erectu, would be reined in by a much larger coalition if the realm succeeded. Thus, some of their leaders swayed over and began to support it openly; some even heralded it at their local meetings.

Slowly working its way up, it ended at their counsils table once more, this time it was from their roots. And they provided full support in the final stage of the 1st alliance, as leaders and contingents of The Torch fled into Gorean lands but were killed or expedited directly out again.

In 1170, just prior to the 1st Alliance beginning to tour, these were in charge of Gorean countries or foreign enclaves.

Never yielding to any outsider, it was a surprise to many when their leadership council agreed to Bend the Knee to the High King of The Realm. But as they say, when Black Oak managed to make the N'Aldaan join his cause, Goreans reviewed the whole thing and accepted the foreign banner as theirs. Then Gorean archers and cavalry became a central part of both the navy and the army of the realm.

So, as the High King used Goreans in the Grimsborg Guard, they became close to the cultural and innovative boom that swept across Grimsborg, the new capital of the realm. Their most skilled and wise also gained access to the vast amount of copied and original lore that flowed into the libraries of the realm.

This spurred their internal conflict once more because they believed the realm would one day fall, as all empires do. And when that day came, the strongest of the Gorean tribes would take the reins of their people. So each tribe sent emissaries to Grimsborg and began building ties with various notabilities of the realm.

Not that they plotted a downfall, but time had taught them that bad endings were what the gods delivered. So, when Kinoblin junks began to arrive at the realm’s shores or sail close by heading north or east, Goreans kept an eye on things.

It was thought that not only at the shores, their eyes narrowed, but they also noticed an increase in active astral gates. At times, they even found slain Goreans at these sites or remains that could be tracked back to one. The concern over Kinoblin affairs was discussed with the Lionel ruler of Island of Piecao as he was the one dealing the most with Kinoblins.

As it continued, without Lionel bringing it up again, nothing about it was heard from Grimsborg. Goreans sent an envoy to Grimsborg, who met Kanziganthir. That visit surely spurred some action, as there suddenly was a large amount of Bergons Borgians, Setils Dark Needles, and agents of the Triad Traders flooding into their lands.

The Goreans were well aware of why this raise of foreign traders, trackers, bards, and whatnots occurred, which allowed them to pry around and report back. Some of the tribes even used this in their internal strife, sadly adding an unneeded layer of complexity to things. Thus did the real cause of the active astral gates, and occasional groups of slaughtered Goreans continued unadressed.

    • The Choi Dynasty is a wealthy and influential family known for their control over Økatuur’s lucrative mining industry. Despite outwardly supporting Queen Rim Ri-Na’s rule, members of the Choi Dynasty have been secretly exploiting their resources to fund foreign mercenaries and arm insurgent groups.
    • The Kang Tribe is a nomadic tribe of traders and merchants who traverse Økatuur’s vast mountain expanses. Disenchanted with the queen’s policies, the Kang Tribe has been quietly providing safe passage and logistical support to enemy agents seeking to infiltrate the kingdom’s borders.

It’s a riddle why these families and tribes, driven by their own grievances and ambitions, covertly supported the great invasion of 1277 as part of their efforts to advance their own interests and agendas for power, influence, or revenge. It’s almost as if they didn’t foresee that for humans, there was no place or role but serving as thralls.

Cartography

They are the majority of Ikarato, Oshon, and Scia. But there are also small enclaves further north and east in Midgard, in Etain, Yugahama, Julmul, and Økatuur. As well as communities at Naldar, Dalip, and West Fjella.

Organisation

All leaders of Ikarato, Oshon, Scia, Etain, Yokahama, Julmul, Økatuur; those representing Goreans at Naldar, Dalip, and West Fjella—either of royal or noble bloodlines or self-made tribes of considerable power—had seats in the Gorean high council.

Each managing their own daily matters and, as such, only consulted upwards in matters of state or if armed conflicts were brewing. Very seldom did the mundane of common Goreans reach the annual meeting, and even rarer was it for them to report anything to the realm and that high king of theirs. Thus, when they presented their considerations about the Kinoblin trade, it surely raised some eyebrows at both ends.

It seems to us that all those present at their meetings, etiquette remembered, somewhat shared the same authority: the mere fact they were present ske for itself. What became clear for outsiders during the cleansing crusade, though, was that internally they were as divided as the realm and the torch and as competitive as Triad Traders and Solid Line.

One thing is certain: though set in stone, their diplomatic decisions were carried out as searing sunrays, regardless of costs.

Military

The ancient Gorean military structure and organisation were characterised by a hierarchical system that emphasised loyalty, discipline, and specialization. The military was typically organised into units based on social class and skill level, with a strong focus on infantry tactics and archery. The leadership hierarchy was well-defined, with commanders appointed based on merit and experience. Strategies often revolved around defensive warfare, utilising fortifications and terrain to their advantage. Additionally, military training and education were highly valued, with soldiers undergoing rigorous drills and exercises to maintain combat readiness.
